LIfe was meant to be lived in service to others.
There is something incredible that happens when we serve one another, choosing to get outside of ourselves and serve without any expectation of a returned favor. I have seen this experience happen over and over again. Someone decides to do something nice for another person, like helping with a move, lending a hand on a project or watching kids in a time of need. It could be volunteering at a food bank or a kind gesture for a neighbor or co-worker. These acts of service seem to always go such a long way.
I think this is why Jesus said: "Let your light shine before others so that they will see your good works and glorify God in heaven."
I believe Jesus knew that the greatest display of his love would be service and sacrifice. He modeled this on earth and his Christ followers continue to model it today. I also think Jesus knew how self-serving we could become. When I give my time without any strings attached, I beat away those easy temptations to serve myself. Most of the options and opportunities to spend time in life are self-serving. Get a better job so you can make more money. Get better clothes so you can stay in fashion. Get. Get. Get. Get. Get. Seems to be the norm of today. Better phone. Better watch. Better everything. Serve myself.
I think Jesus was really on to something when he also said: "I came to seek and save that which is lost." Seems to me that Jesus knew none of the "getting" of living could compare with the joy of giving in life. When I give my time, I begin to see people the way Christ sees them and I am moved with compassion. Conversely, when I hoard my time, when I only serve myself, I am caught with an emptiness wrapped with cynicism and critique. I begin to think wrongfully about people. I start thinking everyone is bad and evil and get discouraged with my plight of life and area of influence. When I serve others, I shed my self focus. When I look for ways to be the hands and feet of Christ, my heart softens. my mind stops wandering, and I begin to experience what life is really all about.
So, find someone to serve this week. It can be the smallest thing in your eyes, but I guarantee you it will be the most refreshing thing to the person you are serving.
No matter your age or stage of life, go get it done and watch what Jesus will do through you as you serve in His name!
