Practice Lent.

Today is the first day of Lent, the 40 days that precede the celebration of Easter.

Most of my growing up I did not observe or pay attention to the tradition of Lent. It was not highlighted in the churches I attended, so I knew very little about it or it’s importance. As an adult, I thankfully learned of its significance and how through fasting and prayer, we can attune our hearts and minds to remember the work of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.

I have seen a variety of ways that Lent is observed among Christ-followers. It is important to pray and ask God how you can intentionally reflect on the sacrifice and redemption of Jesus and prepare for Holy Week and Easter. This preparation is not meant to be formulaic, prideful or something done out of religious duty, but from a place of humility and gratitude.

What are some ways that you can prepare for Good Friday, dark Saturday, and Easter Sunday?

Here are some ideas:

You could begin a devotional or readings of the gospels that describe the passion week. You could daily meditate on the infamous trial, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

You can take up a fast (daily or weekly) of something sacrificial, such as sweets, alcohol, social media or tv.

You can take something on or you can take something away.

You can commit to praying five minutes a day on your knees for 40 days.

You can commit to memorizing a verse a week that focuses on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

During these 40 days of preparation, we have the opportunity to engage in this season and reflect on what Christ has done for us and our humble need for Him.

We can engage Christ and his presence in our lives.

We can fast for a breakthrough or growth in a certain area of our lives.

We can daily practice and remember the power of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross.

We can grow deeper in our love toward God, ourselves and others.

It can be very rich and life-changing.

Choose to practice Lent. You will be better for it.
